Day 10: Mid-Year Review and Uncomfortable Conversations

Able to have an uncomfortable conversation

I usually dive into a tailspin after meeting where there is an uncomfortable conversation, about my performance.

I thought being able to have an uncomfortable conversation meant leading it, not just receiving it..

Nope. Part of being a Leader is the ability to receive feedback that may challenge you—but without challenge, is there a point?

My mid-year review saw a few uncomfortable conversations. Knowing what I need to work on with concise parameters presents a whole new challenge. It’s downright daunting, seeing what I need to learn in a short period.

Instead of a tailspin, I will digest the meeting notes using a modified DUMP and FOCUS. Today’s review lasted almost four hours, a significant investment. It is one I intend to bear fruit. So, it’s time to revise!

The new challenge

Read a chapter a day— weekends are optional—and document the assignment here.

Today’s assignment:

Think of three situations where something’s messing with you and you wish you knew how to better deal with it because ignoring it will cause you grief. It could be a work problem, home problem, a skill you’re itching to learn, anything that’s bugging you.

Three things messing with me:

  • The lack of knowledge and progress in my department and a lack of detail in finished products is what’s holding me from development. Little mistakes erode my confidence and the people I’m doing it for.
  • An overwhelming abundance of projects in various stages of finishing. I have no idea where to start!
  • Not getting paid as a writer. I’m paying to be a writer. That’s messed up!
